What Is Somatic Practice?

“Somatic” comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body.” Somatic practices are therapeutic techniques that help you access healing through sensation, not just cognition.

When you’re disconnected from your body, it’s easy to feel anxious, numb, or overwhelmed. Somatic work gently brings you back into presence.

3 Powerful Somatic Tools to Try

1. Titration

Start small. Rather than diving into big emotional territory, notice one small sensation — like warmth in your hands — and stay with it. This builds capacity and safety.

2. Pendulation

Gently shift your attention between a sensation of discomfort and a sensation of comfort. This back-and-forth movement teaches your body it can visit hard places and return to safety.

3. Self-Touch

Place your hands on your chest, arms, or belly with gentle pressure. Feel the warmth and weight. This simple act provides comfort and signals co-regulation.

Somatic Awareness Is a Skill

Over time, these practices help you feel more grounded, emotionally flexible, and in tune with your body’s cues. This is the essence of embodied healing.
